The Week Ahead …

Huge congratulations to our Transition Years on their fantastic production of ‘Beauty & The Beast’ which had it’s final run on Saturday night. Congratulations also to our TY Entrepreneurs and 2nd Year Entrepreneurs for their impressive results at the Fingal Final of the Student Enterprise Awards (report to follow). Lot’s happening this week as we lead in to Easter Holidays. In sport, our Senior Hurlers will play against Aidan’s Community College today and Transition Years and 5th Years will take part in a Hurling Blitz in DCU tomorrow! Also tomorrow, 2nd Years will take part in the All-Ireland Badminton Finals, best of luck to all competing! On Thursday, Aidan’s 3 will visit Dáil Eireann and 2nd Year Hurlers play Coláiste Eoin. All of our 5th Years will attend a campus tour of UCD on Friday and our 1st Year Gaelic Football team will play Donabate.

Seachtaín na Gaeilge

A full programme of events is planned this week to celebrate Seachtaín na Gaeilge ! On Monday – We have a TV producer speaking to 6th Years about opportunities afforded to Irish speakers in various industries. On Tuesday, 2nd years will take part in a table quiz. On Wednesday, TY students will take part in a film festival. On Thursday, 3rd years will take part in a table quiz and finally on Friday, Conradh na Gaeilge will host an Irish language workshop for 5th year students. Outside of the scheduled ‘imeachtaí’ above we will have a number of other events such as ‘Comórtas na bPóstaeir’ for 1st year students, a ‘Memes as Gaeilge’ competition for 3rd years and a ‘Pléigh agus Tae’ speaking session for 6th year students.

Scifest Week Review

We had a very successful Scifest Week last week with lots of activity around the school. On Tuesday last, our 2nd Years took part in SciFest@school. 45 science projects were on display. The students had spent weeks researching and testing their hypotheses before putting their findings on display. Students shared their work with their peers and other year groups. The work was judged by Ms. Catherine Tattersall from SciFest, Dr. Peter Knief and our own Ms. Aideen Lambe.  The winners were: 1st Prize: How does hand sanitiser affect bacteria? by Joseph Kirwan and Kyle Coogan 2nd Prize: How does the length of time an egg is in vinegar affect how high it bounces? by Kamal Risk, Erikas Sruogis, Harry Stone and Kyle Trehy Highly Commended: Investigating how temperature affects the bounce of a tennis ball: by Gavin Pluck, Craig Smart, Leo MacAmbhlaoibh Fintan’s Spirit Prize: Insoles and their effect on how high you jump: by Conal Feely, Ronan Magsalay, Liam Cronan Eir Grid Prize: What insulates a person best? by Max Casey, Anthony Hobbs, Josh Egan Well done to all involved! Last Thursday, our 5th Years had a very interesting talk by Scientific researcher and Lecturer Dr. Bernard Drumm of Dundalk IT. He outlined why and how he became a Scientist. The students learned about all the pathways to become a Scientist and the opportunities that lie ahead for them. On Friday, our 1st Years enjoyed a Science quiz and Science riddles facilitated by the Science Department and Prefect volunteers. All during the week, tutor classes were shown short Science related videos and we had a school wide Science riddle announced every morning with a prize for the first student to solve the problem! A very enjoyable week overall where we all learned and discovered lots. Many thanks to the Science Department for all the hard work involved!

The Week Ahead …. Scifest, Sports & Subject Choices!

In addition to celebrating SciFest all this week at St. Fintan’s, we will be welcoming back our Transition Years from their Ski Trip and we’re looking forward to hearing about all of their exploits on the slopes in Italy! In Sports, we have yet another busy week of fixtures ahead with an all day Frisbee event for TY’s on Tuesday and the Under 16 Badminton Final against Castleknock in Terenure. Our Senior Gaelic Football Team will take on Carolyn College on Thursday and the 1st Year Gaelic Football Team will play Aidan’s CBS on Friday. In addition, there will be a Parent Information Evening on Wednesday for 5th Year Subject Choice and our annual TY Subject Taster Talks will take place on Thursday and Friday.

Scifest Week

This week is Scifest Week and we will be celebrating all things Science related with a Science fair, quizzes, riddles and a guest speaker. Each day will start with a riddle for students to figure out with a prize for the winner. On Tuesday, there will be a Scifest exhibition in the gym organised by 2nd Years with 1st and 3rd Year groups given time to explore the projects on show. On Thursday, we will have a talk in the cafeteria by Bernard Drumm from Dundalk IT to all 5th year Science students and we will finish the week on Friday with a Science quiz for 1st Years.

The Week Ahead …

It’s another busy week ahead at St. Fintan’s! Our Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle students started their Mock Examinations this morning and we wish them all the best of luck over the next two weeks! Our French exchange students are here and hoping for some Irish sunshine after today’s rain. There are lots of activities planned with students taking part in Irish sports on Tuesday, attending class tasters and a walk around Howth on Wednesday, an Irish Céili on Thursday and a Geography and History of Dublin tour on Friday in town. Our Transition Years enjoyed a very interesting Forensics workshop on Monday and will attend a Hospitality workshop on Thursday. Lots happening in sport this week too with away matches on Tuesday for our 2nd Year hurlers against Terenure College and our 1st Year Gaelic Football team will play Portmarnock. Thursday marks the first round game for our Senior Cup Rugby Team who will clash with Gonzaga College in Terenure. Best of luck to all!

‘A History of St. Fintan’s High School’ Book Launch

The launch of ‘A History of St. Fintan’s High School’ written by teacher, Shane Gilleran will take place on Tuesday, the 28th of November in the Elphin Function Room in Baldoyle at 7:30pm. The book has been written by Shane to celebrate 80 Years of St. Fintan’s High School and encapsulates the history of our school and the contributions made to it’s 8o year history by former brothers, principals, deputy principals, teachers, students, boards of management, parents’ associations, past pupils and members of the surrounding community. Decade by decade, Shane brings us down memory lane, describing the ups and downs of school life amid the social changes of the time. He also shares memories of past pupils and teachers which add a colourful and often humorous dimension to the story of our school. We would be delighted to welcome you all to the book launch on the 28th of November to celebrate the occasion with us. Should you wish to attend, please email an expression of interest to [email protected]. This will allow us to gauge the numbers attending. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night for €15.00 and we would really appreciate your support in this regard. All funds received will be used to cover the cost of the publication and any future profits will be used to support extra-curricular and othe activities in the school. Should you be unable to attend on the 28th, we would be most grateful if you could please support Shane, and the school by purchasing a copy of the book at some stage after the launch. We will let you know how to go about buying it soon after the launch.

Stand Up & Be You Week!

A hugely successful week has ended celebrating Stand Up & Be You and the launch of our Allyship Club on Thursday! We have had an action-packed week with activities for all of our year groups including scratch art created by 1st Years, friendship bracelets made in 2nd Year SPHE, a giant outdoor chalk mural completed by 3rd Years and Transition Years and a movie screening of Bohemian Rhapsody for 5th and 6th Years! On Wednesday this week, the whole school came together in a kaleidoscope of colour to create a multicoloured heart drone pic out on the field! On Thursday, we launched our Allyship Club, a wonderful initiative spearheaded by 6th Year, Cúán Bannon O’Regan with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tea and cake! We carried out LGBTQ+ Awareness Presentations during Tutor time all week and we hope we have raised awarenesss amongst our whole school community about the importance of creating a welcoming school for all where we celebrate each other’s individuality and everybody’s right to be completely themselves!

6th Year Art Students go to Paris!

Our 6th Year Art group enjoyed a very successful Art & Culture trip to Paris last week during mid-term. We covered a huge amount of ground over the four day trip including a visit to the Louvre Museum, The Musee D’Orsay, Museé Picasso, Sacre Coeur and the Arc de Triomphe! We got to explore the fantastic and inspiring No. 59 Rivoli, a cooperative space in the centre of Paris where the students were able to see artist’s working in their own studio spaces. We also enjoyed a trip along the Seine on the Bateaux Mouches River Cruise and a Tuk Tuk tour through the main landmarks of central Paris. It was a very enjoyable and inspiring trip for all and a good chance to practice a bit of French for the orals!! Enjoy our gallery below of some snapshots of the trip!

We enjoyed a wonderful morning with 6th Years today immersing ourselves in the magical Klimt Immersive Exhibition. A lovely chance to get to know the work of Gustav Klimt and experience his art interactively as well as take a relaxing break from study before the going gets tough!

Senior Tennis Success

Well done to the Senior Tennis Team who won the Leinster School Boy’s Tennis Division 2 on May 25th at Fitzwilliam LTC. It was a very close match against a very strong St. Gerard’s School. Well done to all involved. A huge thanks to Leinster School Boy’s tennis for organising the event for all schools. A special thanks to Sutton Lawn Tennis Club who facilitated all of our matches at Minor, Junior and Senior level.

6th Year Graduation 2022-2023

Alex’s Army – Raising Awareness and Support for Children Living with Cancer

Best of luck to our TY student, Alex McEleney who will appear on Ireland AM tomorrow, Thursday 25th of May at 9:30 am approximately. We are immensely proud of Alex here at St. Fintan’s High School and his initiative, Alex’s Army. Through this and other work, Alex uses his own experience to raise awareness and support for children living with cancer and their families. What an inspirational young man!

Huge congratulations to our Senior Hurling team who last week defeated Colaise Eoin to be crowned Dublin Senior A Hurling Champions 2022. This caps off a really successful hurling season for St. Fintan’s with our under 14 and under 16 teams also reaching their respective finals.
