Personal Development and Guidance is a 7-8 week module in Transition Year, consisting of 3 main components. The first is Mindfulness and Stress Management, where students will develop an awareness of their physical body, and the indicators of stress in their body. The second is Relationships and Sexual Education, and the third is Subject Planning for senior cycle, with some Career Guidance.
Students will practice simple techniques to reduce stress, including a body scan, box breathing, alternate nasal breathing and 5-4-3-2-1 sensory mindfulness technique.
Students will investigate different categories of feelings, and how to distinguish between them.
Students will examine different types of relationship, and define what identifies a positive relationship.
Students will learn about the concept of consent, and examine scenarios where consent should be considered.
Students will consider the role of pornography in the lives of young people, and how it impacts their attitudes towards sexual relationships.
Students will learn about different intelligences, and self-test on emotional intelligence and different interests.
Students will learn how to use careersportal.ie and research CAO courses and apprenticeships.
