Craft & Design

Teacher: Ruth Barry

The TY Craft Module concentrates on introducing students to craft through a number of classes during a six-week module. Students are asked to define what they think craft is after looking at the work of a group of craftspeople and watching videos of them describing their work. Students are asked to relate craft to their own lives by questioning what crafts they have encountered in their own homes and world. Students are then required to research, design and make their own craft piece. The emphasis is on developing an appreciation for craftspeople and their work and on understanding the importance of technique, use of materials and work ethic involved in producing craftwork. Our intention is also for students to experience wellbeing through the meditative and mindful process of creating a craft piece.

Assessment:

Students are required to produce a personal craftpiece and to be able to discuss both orally and in written form their experience in making the piece (what they felt worked well, how they would adapt/change it etc..)
